A Win-Win Solution

by: Joshua Tallas

Since we are doing a packaging project I think ill post something about it.
OK, what if we bought a product and that item's packaging could be used for something else useful other than a package? This will definitely give landfills a break. I have been looking up numerous of products that serve as an afterlife. Here are a some products I found online!

 Steve Haslip's Hangerpak
This product won first place at the D&AD students awards in 2007.

Cava wine bottle packaging by Spanish design firm Ciclus.

Slick packaging for Newton running shoes. Molded recycled cardboard. Most shoes aren't perfectly square.

This package turns into a lampshade

This package turns into a T.V stand!

I think as designers this is a very important thing we should consider. It helps the environment and reduces landfill waste. Its a Win-win!

  1. These are all great packaging designs. Now I have to review my project to add functions to it.

One concern I have is that the material for these packages have to be more durable than the other competitors or else there won't be a point for us to use it for the secondary function. This would mean a higher cost to package it.

  2. The TV stand stood out most for me, very practical if it's your first tv or if its for a guest room/ kids room kind of thing. I don't think the lampshade actually looks that great, but it gets points for ingenuity. As for the shoe box, I worked for Vans for two years and those containers look like a bitch to stack. While I see the merit in using less space, it's utterly impractical in a stock room. Nice finds though!

  3. I think these are all really unique ideas for packaging having multiple purposes. It seems like being able to recycle and reuse objects is becoming more and more common so it's important to start thinking about designs that are more "green" or can have a greater purpose. I agree with Duncan that the packaging costs will go up, costing more for the company but they're great ideas and probably will be come more popular in the future.

  4. You found some really cool and innovative packaging designs! These designers were definitely thinking outside the box. Ha ha. The package that turns into a hanger is awesome and saves a lot of waste since nothing is being thrown away. Packages and hangers make up a decent portion of our landfills so this is an effective solution for that. Plus we would never need to buy hangers, or have too many or too few. All of your examples are nice in how they share the quality of the packaging becoming a part of the product.

  5. My gosh, I really like this post! The packaging ideas are so unique and functional. We think very little of packaging when we buy something, well unless you are a designer. But the concept of being about to use a package with the item that it carries is a wonderful concept, like recycling it or giving it further purpose than just being a box. I also like the shoes and that they fit in a box made special for shoes.

  6. This is so great! Its amazing how the packaging of a certain product can turn into the project itself! I never even thought that someone could even do that. I think that is such a great and efficient way to package products because it isn't wasting any of our resources. What a great find!

  7. That is quite fantastic. To consider the life of the package after it's packaging is a very ethical thing to do and in this day and age a lot of people don't mind paying a little more for something extra. They're fantastic concepts and will be good things to keep in mind in the future.

  8. I love the concept of using packaging for more than just carrying a product. Although it is a little unconventional I think for most of these, it is a really great idea and concept that I think could really be useful in a society that needs to reuse more. I also think that because the packaging is functional, it'll probably make the product more expensive, so that is something to think about.

  9. This post has literally blown my mind. I mean why don't we do this for everything? I"m someone who hates to waste anything. In fact I still hang on to boxes for things buy cuz I might need it for a project. But this changes everything. If I ever design a product, the functional container concept will have to be a part of the process.
