FZD Design Blog

Feng Zhu is a renowned concept artist who opened up his own design school in Singapore. On his website, he has a link to a design blog where he posts some of his student's work (which is fantastic, by the way) as well as some of his own work. Feng also has a bunch of video tutorials where he addresses many techniques, tips, and commonly asked questions about the entertainment and concept art industries. Seeing as this is the field I want to go into, I have found his videos extremely helpful in understanding what it's going to be like working in the industry -- and what it takes to break in.

Here's the link to his school's site: http://www.fengzhudesign.com/

If you want to learn more about the Concept Art industry, this video is the most helpful one I've found.

  1. Awesome! I think it's neat to see how concept art translates to the big screen or a video game. It takes someones create ideas and hard work to create something like this. I viewed his blog and it was really fun to see all the concept art, and I wonder how many hours it must have taken to create to create these.

  2. Being a gamer, I've sat staring at many video game websites, waiting for pending releases and gawking at concept art to help me get over the wait. (most recent obsession: Dragon Age Inquisition from Bioware.) Of the multitude of concept art and artists for various games that I have seen, I've noticed a striking similarity regardless of genre. No matter what the artist is designing, they always have this smudged, painterly feel to their concept art. I think this is a very specific 'concept art' style because I've seen tons of concept artists use it. It's quicker than painting every digital detail, but it does enough to get the point across. Concept art is, after all, the primary concept for the game it participates in designing. The thick, blurry brush strokes wind up creating a dreamy sort of landscape. Feng Zhu's landscapes aren't an exception to this observation, but his work is still unique and intriguing enough to be a pleasant addition to the world of concept art.

  3. The concept art from these students is amazing. To have such artistic ability to create such unique character and environment concept art is such a blessing. The concept art that caught my interest the most was the character designs for Journey to the West. The steam punk theme was really cool to see embedded.

    Thanks for Sharing.
