User Experience Design

User Experience Design

User experience design (a.k.a. UX design) is an essential process when designing any product you can imagine from a packing for a wine bottle to an mobile device application. Everything we do as designers impacts the experience that users feel when using the product.

UX design is a difficult process to explain because it deals with how the human mind perceives and discovers   different objects in the physical world around us. This happens no matter what we are doing or seeing.

For example when we look at an mobile application, our brains first try figure out if we have seen anything their before that we know how to use. After that step our brains then try to find a pattern in what we are seeing or doing and then do it better. This is very important because when we find what we are familiar with or can repeat something we are doing successfully, our brains reward us with endorphins to encourages us to continue. This process not only helps us learn but also shapes the ways our brains work.

To gain further insight into this amazing process, there is a great book which I have read is called Psychology of Everyday Things by Donald Norman. Donald Norman is a very well known UX designer who is the major reason why the field of UX design is used today. A great article that goes over this book briefly can be found here: http://uxdesign.com/user-experience-design-books/article/psychology-everyday-things-donald-norman/36

If you are interested in this topic and want to see some interesting concepts from science fiction on possible future user experiences and interfaces, check out this link: http://uxdesign.smashingmagazine.com/2013/03/01/sci-fi-interaction-designers-gestural-interfaces/

Ultimately, I hope that you learned something new about how your brain works and how to make products better for your users. And as always, thanks for reading.
