So I came across an article on Designer Daily that I found particularly interesting titled "The World of Mad Men in 2013." This article contained a series of pictures from different advertising agencies today, which were compared to advertisements in the 60's. Funny enough, most of the ads mash-up quite well and are eerily similar. It seems that not only is fashion and music coming full circle to older decades, but graphic design is as well! Here are the advertisements from the article:
This really shows that good design never gets old or dies. I think this is very encouraging since today everyone thinks they are a designer. A good designer though should always be able to rise to the top and show that design is not as easy as most people think.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I think this designer went above-and-beyond the message by including elements such as color-contrast and typography appropriately. Apart from the physical design, I like the choices of each object; it's a very accurate representation for each time period.

ReplyDeleteI love these! It's so great to see designs that seem to follow trends of the time, but actually evolve into pieces that people draw inspiration from. The flat colors, the great amount of white space, symmetry, and the minimal use of text and a small hint of a line to separate facts. This was an awesome find!
ReplyDeleteIt's an interesting sort of split up, yet still cohesive design. Using completely different fonts and colors and objects, yet still keeping the two sides connected.
ReplyDeleteAlthough, I don't think I see the 60s advertisements in there. It looks like it was all designed this year. Unless I'm missing something.
This is very interesting because I personally find my own work becoming more and more simplistic like design styles were in the past. I am inspired by many designers that use blank space to their advantage and I find these pictures very inspiring as well.
ReplyDeleteAs everyone has stated the designs mash up very well with the use of negative space and symmetry. Very clean and attractive overall. What really intrigues me is the comparison from then to now. These photos are not only showing the difference but what I see is inspiration. The first photo shows the contrast of alcohol to a smoothie, while images 2-5 show the move from paper waste to the world wide web for storage. The last photo may be the most powerful showing the comparison of the yoga mat/ cigarette. Overall I think these designs are meant to influence us to live a more "eco-friendly" and "healthy" lifestyle. Also it depicts a sense of praise to the human race, showcasing that we have only "improved" our way of living.
ReplyDeleteI think this is really cool and reiterates what we earned n John's class the other day about how styles go in and out so quickly. Not only with design, but fashion as well. There is always the "now" or the "cool design" aesthetics at the time, but they will always become old at some point. Most interestingly though, I find them to aways come full circle in at least a few decades but maybe with a little flare different each time! Very interesting though!
